This bread is quick and easy to make and your guests will love it. It’s a savory version of traditional southern breakfast biscuits. There are several variations to this recipe that can adapt it to different types of entrees but this is one of my favorites.
- 2 cups plain flour, sifted
- 5 tablespoons cold unsalted butter
- 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
- 2 T onion powder
- 2 tsp. dry minced onion
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 T baking powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 cup cold milk
- 1 egg, beaten
It’s very important that the milk and butter be cold when you mix the dough so that the biscuits will bake up light and flaky. Cut the butter up into cubes and then put it back into the refrigerator for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 425F.
Put the dry ingredients into a mixing bowl and whisk them together. Use a pastry cutter to blend the butter into the dry ingredients. Add the milk and beaten egg together and blend into the flour mixture until it makes a loose ball.
Pour the dough out onto a floured surface and gently roll it out to about a half inch thickness. Use a cookie cutter or biscuit cutter to cut out the biscuits and place them on a buttered sheet pan. Bake them until golden brown ( between 12-15 minutes)and serve with whipped butter.
Cheesy Bacon Garlic Biscuits
This easy biscuit recipe is sure to become a favorite for holiday brunches or anytime you want to show off your culinary skills. They’ll never know how simple these tasty cheesy garlic bacon biscuits are to make. If you are serving them at a brunch or formal breakfast event, it is simple to cut them into triangle shapes and serve them as cones with clotted cream or creme fraiche.
You will need:
- 2 cups sifted all purpose flour
- 3 T cold butter
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan
- 1/4 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup shredded cheddar ( for topping the biscuits)
- 1/2 cup chopped crisp bacon (substitute real bacon bits if you like)
- 2 T minced garlic
- 4 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 3/4 cup buttermilk
Cut the butter into cubes and place in ice box to chill
Blend flour, baking soda and salt together
Cut ice cold cubed butter into the flour using a pastry cutter or hand mixer
Mix shredded cheese, Parmesan, bacon and garlic into the flour mixture
Stir in the buttermilk
An important note:
Do not over mix the dough because handling it too much will release the gluten in the flour and make your biscuits or scones tough. Only mix it until the flour is completely moistened and then turn it out onto a floured surface.
Gently roll the dough out until it is about a half inch thick and then use a cookie cutter or biscuit cutter to cut out the biscuits. Place them onto an ungreased baking sheet and put them into the ice box for 30 minutes before baking. This second chill will ensure that your biscuits bake up tender and flaky.
Preheat your oven to 425F.
Spread the shredded sharp cheddar cheese on top of the biscuits and place the pan into the oven on the center rack. Bake at 425F for 10-12 minutes. The bottoms of the biscuits will be starting to turn golden brown when they are done. Now serve these delicious savory biscuits with flavored whipped butter, clotted cream or creme fraiche. Your friends and family will beg for more!
Here is another serving idea:
Cut the biscuits open and place baked egg and ham inside. Serve on a platter as a quick breakfast at office meetings or clubs groups. It’s an easy, lower cost way to impress your friends and associates.
