Fruit Bowls – Easy Summertime Food

Getting Ready

You don’t have to live on the beach to enjoy a beach party. Your deck, patio or back yard will do just fine. Get some decorative lighting, beach blankets and tiki torches, a couple of galvanized wash tubs to serve ice and cold food out of and you are almost there!

Carving the fruit bowls

The first step to having beach party fruit bowls is to make the bowls. You are going to need a medium sized watermelon, 3 canteloupes and one large honeydew melon. We are going to make a decorative fruit bowl out of each kind of melon.

Carving the watermelon

Lay the watermelon on it’s side and carefully use a sharp knife ( I prefer a serrated edge knife) cut away the top 1/3 of the melon. Use a medium icre cream scoop and scoop out melon balls and store in a covered bowl in the refrigerator for later. Use a paring knife to carve the edges of the bowl in any way you desire. When you have taken all the melon balls out that you need you can take a large spoon and smooth out the inside of the bowl.

Repeat the above process with one of the canteloupe and the honey dew melon. Keep all the fruit balls cold until it’s time to fill them with the fruit mixtures.

Great Fruit Bowl Fillers

Easy Melon Mix

For the first mix we will take a large bowl and combine the melon balls with 1/2 inch pineapple chunks and gently pour into carved watermelon bowl. Then pour the glaze mix over top and store cold for service. The way I like to do this is to place all three melon bowls into ice in a medium galvanized wash tub decorated with beach motif items such as palm fronds and sea shells or starfish.

The Glaze

For this recipe you will need:

1 cup Bacardi Red Rum
1 cup pineapple juice
1/8 tsp fresh ginger
1/4 shredded coconut

Blend all ingredients in the food processor until the mixture is smooth. Pour over the fruit and garnish with a lemon twist on top.

Mix Number 2

This mixture will be served from the honeydew bowl. The ingredients you will need are:

2 large firm bananas
1 quart fresh strawberries, topped and halved
2 large navel oranges wedged
1 pint raspberries
1 cup coconut cut into 1/4 inch cubes
1/4 cup lemon juice

Put all the fruit into the honeydew bowl and drizzle with the lemon juice. Keep cold till service.

Banana Mango Papaya Mix

I like this one. Mix in large bowl 2 sliced bananas, 1 cup diced papaya, 1 cup diced mango. The mango and papaya should be roughly 1/2 inch chunks. Add 1/4 cup maraschino cherries, 1/2 cup slivered almonds. To glaze, mix 1/2 cup coconut milk and 1/2 cup Kahlua. Serve ice cold and garnish with fresh lemongrass. This one is served from the cantaloupe bowl.
